Day 7: A Photo That Makes Me Happy

I love this picture of my family, it was taken about eleven years ago.  Every time I see this picture, I smile when I see the way my children used to be:  so full of hope and promise.  Now I see them as young adults and I’ve been blessed to see the fulfillment of everything that I hoped they’d become and more. Do you have a photograph that makes you smile?

Raunchy Diesel Ad Too Hot for the Brooklyn Law School Library

Um, wow!  It takes a lot to make me blush but I have to say, the risqué photographs taken by Diesel in the Brooklyn Law School library are enough to make even this librarian’s bun get tight. The Brooklyn Law School library is reportedly upset about the pictures and the interim dean has sent an email to faculty, staff and students stating as much but my question is this ~ when they gave photographers permission to use their premises for the photographs, did they give them carte blanche?  Was no one from the library or college staff on site to make sure things went off without a hitch?  And if…

I Hope You Have One Just Like You…

I don’t know about y’all but I grew up in one of those households where kids and parents had a “distant” relationship.  We knew that our parents loved us but we weren’t what you’d call “friends.”  There was respect and a healthy amount of fear(I think my mom had eyes in the back of her head, read here to find out why) but there was no friendship.  And I was ok with that.  Really, the last thing I wanted was to be my mom’s pal and I’m pretty certain that she felt the same way. That being said, I used to go out of my way to drive my mother…

    Day 5: My Favorite Quote

Shoes can affect your personality and your mood.  Have you ever noticed how putting on a pair of sneakers makes you feel shlumpy?  But putting on a pair of stilettos makes you feel sexy?  When I received that postcard from a friend, I was going through a difficult time in my life ~ I wasn’t sure where I was or what I was doing with myself.  I honestly felt like I was emotionally and spiritually tapped out and I didn’t know how to pull myself together and then that postcard arrived in the mail… It was just what I needed to get myself in gear.  I put on my cutest…

    Day 4: My Favorite Books

When I was a little girl, my favorite place in the world was the library.  I was a nerdy little girl who was often the object of a lot of teasing and the butt of endless jokes, and the library was the one place the bullies never seemed to enter.  The librarian, Mr. Wolford, would push a book cart my way and tell me to shelve.  Or he’d slide a stack of books across his desk and say he thought I’d enjoy them.  But it was my friend, Lisa, who introduced me to the joys of Danielle Steel when we were in about the 8th or 9th grade…  I would…

Day 3: My Favorite Television Shows

Ok, at this point I’ve just totally given up on picking just one of anything…  I’m 37 years old, there’s a lot of music playing, book reading, television and movie watching wrapped up in those years. I tried not to list every television show that I’ve ever watched, but I wanted to list shows that have some sort of sentimental or cognitive attachment.  So without any further ado, here are my favorite television shows (by year): All in the Family (1971), Good Times (1974), The Jeffersons (1975)~ I just had to lump them all together.  The writing on those shows was amazing and the jokes still hold up.  They covered everything from abortion…

Day 2: My Favorite Movies (Again, I Can’t Pick Just One)

I’m not a big movie person.  I blame it on my ability to become totally distracted by anything shiny.  Seriously, I have the attention span of a squirrel.  But that being said, there are a few movies that will make me stop whatever it is that I’m doing and become totally engrossed in the story. In order by date (hey, I’m a librarian, I categorize things in my sleep): Imitation of Life (1959) ~ I found out at my dad’s funeral that his favorite song was “Troubles of this World” sung by Mahalia Jackson who sings the song in the movie at the mother’s funeral.  My dad didn’t know this…

Coffee Bars in the High School

A few months ago, I noticed that my kids were running around the house collecting any loose coins that they found lying around on the tables, in the car, etc.  This didn’t bother me, I thought maybe they were being industrious and trying to save money, after all, they know that my husband and I have been collecting coins for years.  Snicker if you want, but by the end of the year we once had a little over $600.  But when they started hitting up my coin stash, I got suspicious. “What are you doing?” I asked Miss 13.  She looked at me in the way that only a 13~year~old…
