Day 1: My Favorite Songs (I Can’t Pick Just One)

    8 November 2010 / 10 Comments

I love music, unfortunately, I’m not very musically inclined.  Well, except when I’m in the car ~ then I turn up the radio and totally rock out to some of my favorite songs.  Sometimes, if I’m really “feeling it”  I’ll pull over on the side of the road and try to force the kids to sing along with me. I couldn’t pick just one song because there are are so many that mean a lot to me for various reasons, so I decided to break them down into categories and offer two selections from each one.  Overachieve, much? Classical Somewhere in Time by Maksim Rhapsody on a Theme of Paginini…

I Started Crying at the Reference Desk

    1 November 2010 / 16 Comments

Earlier this evening there were 4 missed calls on my cell phone, two from my husband and two from Miss 17 as well as a text message that read: “Call Symone!”  My heart started to race…  I’m at work, what in the heck is so important that it warrants four phone calls and a text? So I called home and was promptly told “Mom, I’m putting you on speaker phone, ok?  Is that ok?”  I’ve taught my children to warn people before putting them on speaker, it spares people from any potentially embarrassing moments. I agreed and all I heard was “mumble…. static… mumble…. that was Grandma…. So what do…

    “I Voted” Badge on Foursquare

    29 October 2010 / 0 Comments

Currently, I’m teaching American National Government at Misericordia University, and this has been just as much a learning experience for me as it has been for my students.  When the class first started, I told my students that along with meeting the University’s goals, I have several outcomes for the course too.  I want them to: Vote Know the issues Evaluate their sources of information Understand the values that they bring with them to the polls In each of my classes (I’ve taught two so far), I explain not only the foundations of the government and the political process but I also explain the origins of the Articles of Confederation…

    The Banana Incident of 1978

    12 October 2010 / 7 Comments

I don’t think it’s any secret that I love monkeys.  No, that’s not true.  I’m obsessed with monkeys.  And lest you think it’s just me, my cousin has informed me that her daughter also has an intense love for monkeys as does another cousin of mine.  A family thing?  Probably not, the rest of the family is totally repulsed by our monkey love. Anyway, my love for monkeys began when I was quite young and continues to this day.  Just ask my loving and patient husband who has to stare at a monkey every time he, ahem, avails himself of the facilities.  Seriously, if you want to know the real…

    I Got PINKED!

    11 October 2010 / 2 Comments

I’d like to thank Stephanie at Shear Tease in Wyoming, PA for getting me PINKED in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every year,  I go pink in the hopes that we will find a cure for this awful disease.  I do it to celebrate the survivors in my family:  my mother~in~law, Gloria, and my aunt, Aunt Sylvia.  I also do it to in memory of my great~aunts who did not survive. If you know anyone who has been touched by this disease, please consider donating to my friends, Mylynka and Lupe, who are participating in the Susan G. Komen 3~Day for a Cure.  Simply click on my picture above…

1 October is Follow a Library Day on Twitter

    29 September 2010 / 6 Comments

Tips for Library Patrons Don’t just follow your library, talk to them If a librarian does something well, tweet about it Offer suggestions for material Tweet about activities that you and your family enjoy Following your library shows that you support your library.  Talk to your librarians on Twitter, engage other library patrons, use Twitter to set up book group meetings or to share movie suggestions.  Treat Twitter as an extension of your library’s services, because that is exactly what it is ~ reference help in 140 characters or less. Tips for Libraries Follow your patrons back Respond to their concerns Update your status often Promote your events These may…

The UN Considers Appointing an Alien Ambassador

    28 September 2010 / 1 Comment

I had to create a whole new category called “WTH? Files” for this post.  I tried to squeeze it in to one of the other categories, but this story is so flippin’  bizarre that I couldn’t even fake it.  Seriously, this deserves a “WTbleep” but this is a family blog…. The UN (as in the United Nations that occupies square footage in New York) is thinking about appointing an ambassador to the alien world.  *blink*  According to Malaysian astrophysicist, Mazlan Othman, will be named UN ambassador to extraterrestrials (pending approval from the UN scientific advisory committees and the General Assembly because, you know, that would legitimize the appointment). Currently the director of the…

Have a Smart Phone? Use the Barcode Scanner App to Take Living Outside the Stacks with You on the Go!

    24 September 2010 / 8 Comments

Do you have a smart phone?  Have you noticed that little barcode reader app in the App Store?  Well, I did and, honestly, I had no idea what I’d use it for but I downloaded it anyway.  Hey, I figured it’s free so give it a try and if I hate it ~ no harm, no foul.  I heart it!  It’s probably one of my most played with apps. I use it when I’m shopping and I can’t find the price on something, scan it with the barcode reader and voilá there’s the price.  Or if I run across a book and I want to find out information about it,…
