One of The Hubs and my favorite things to do is to go to historic towns for a little sightseeing and antiquing. Rather than stay at hotels, we prefer the coziness and friendliness of B&Bs. For the last weekend in 2024, The Hubs and I were joined by my sister and her husband at The Orchid in Jackson, Mississippi.
A few weeks ago, I was mindlessly scrolling Instagram when I came across a video of a young lady happily dancing around a beautiful historic home, so, naturally, I had to click through, read the caption, and find out what she was talking about. I’m so happy I did. I turned out, she’d spent the weekend at this beautiful B&B in Jackson, Mississippi. I sent the link to The Hubs and was like “What do you think?” He responded with a quick “Let’s do it. Invite your sister and her husband.” So I did…
Here are a few pictures from our stay…
Our stay was incredibly relaxing and well worth the drive and the flat tire. Our plan is to go back when the weather is more cooperative and really take in the sights.
THINGS TO DO
The weather was uncooperative, so we didn’t really get the chance to do much. However, we did tour the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum {no pictures}. It was worth the trip just for that experience. My head and heart were spinning from the enormity of the collection as well as from the brutality of people towards each other. I look back at what Civil Rights workers went through to get us to this point and it breaks my heart that we still have so far to go.
ABOUT THE ORCHID
The Orchid is a Black-owned, veteran-owned bed and breakfast in the heart of Jackson, Mississippi. The home has been beautifully restored and updated with many modern conveniences, including ensuite bathrooms. Guests are treated to a delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs, homemade biscuits, and turkey bacon, with a selection of locally sourced jellies. To visit the website, click here. To see the room where we stayed, click here.
The Orchid is also known as the Millsaps-Buie House. It was built for Major Reuben Webster Millsaps, a veteran of the Confederate Army. At the end of the war, Millsaps became a wealthy cotton broker and banker, who donated money to the creation of Millsaps College in 1890. Fun fact: in 1965, Millsaps College became the first all-white college in Mississippi to voluntarily desegregate. The home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 19 June 1973.
IT’S YOUR TURN
