Coffee Talk {living outside the stacks}

I’d like to welcome you to Coffee Talk. If you’re new here, this is where I share some of the great and not~so~great stuff that I find on the web. Topics range from news stories that leave me scratchin’ my head to DIYs that I think are absolutely clever. And, who knows, there may even be a recipe thrown in here or there just for fun.

I had to do a quick check, it’s been about 2 months since our last chat. So. Much. Has. Happened. I’m not even talking about nationally, I’m just talking about in my home.

Both of The Hubs parents have been diagnosed with cancer. They were diagnosed within a week of each other. To say this is overwhelming would be an understatement. The Hubs has been traveling back and forth between here and Pennsylvania to spend time with his parents and take some of the pressure off of his sister. I don’t have any vacation time yet, so I’ve been staying home with Squeekerz. The Hubs mom had to have surgery and radiation and his dad had chemo. It’s just too much. People like to say “God doesn’t put more on you than you can bear.” That’s neither true or biblical. The Bible actually says:

Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.

2 Corinthians 1:9 NIV

We are really having to trust in and lean on Him. The Hubs is trying to be strong, but I know this is hurting him and it’s hurting me because there’s nothing I can do to alleviate his pain.

I haven’t really talked about my job on the blog, but today I want to share a little bit of fun that I had… The college is in the process of building a new campus and today I was able to meet with the architects and talk about the new library. You guys, I’ve never been part of the creation of a new library and it is overwhelming. I keep thinking about the libraries where I’ve worked and how long the they and their contents have been in place and the enormity of the decisions I have to make are hitting me hard. Outlet placement, flooring, storage, office space, study space, etc., all of it has to make sense now and well into the future. So I’m thinking about the things that have worked well in my previous libraries and things that didn’t work well, and I’m trying to use those ideas to make my decisions. I cannot emphasize how honored I am to be part of the process. At some point, I plan to go downtown and take some pictures, which I’ll share either here, Facebook, or Instagram.

The Hubs and I are still getting regular deliveries of Hello Fresh. We’ve been getting it every week since we moved here and I don’t think we’ve had a meal that we didn’t like. That doesn’t mean that we love them all, it just means that we’ve enjoyed each selection and, while there are a few we wouldn’t eat again, we’re happy we tried them. And I’ll say, cooking with Hello Fresh has definitely made me much more adventurous in the kitchen. When we grocery shop, I buy things from previous meals and mix and match to create new meals. Right now, my favorite side is roasted sweet potato wedges. So delicious. If you’d like to give it a try, I have some coupon codes, just send me an email at livingoutsidethestacks@gmail.com.

I’m still looking for bedding for our bedroom. A few months ago, I bought some teal velvet curtains {I know, but I really love velvet} for our bedroom, but they don’t fit with the furniture pieces, so… My plan is to put the velvet curtains in the guest room and redo the master bedroom. I’m just not sure what color. Right now, everything in here {except the teal curtains} is brown. Whatever I choose, it has to work with a beige chair. I like deep saturated colors like purple, gold, burgundy, etc. I dunno, I guess I’ll keep searching.

I really need to say this: Megyn Kelly is either willfully ignorant or she really thinks saying ridiculous things will help her ratings. For the people in the back: BLACKFACE IS RACIST, HURTFUL, AN OFFENSIVE. If your costume is a caricature of or requires you to alter your skin color to reflect that of another ethnicity, just don’t.

Now, it’s your turn… Anything have you scratching your head or belly laughing?
