Home Office {living outside the stacks}

When we first moved to our new house, I’d planned to make my office upstairs but Squeekerz had other ideas. He’ll be 18 this year and going up and down the stairs is incredibly difficult for him. For the first few months, I carried him upstairs whenever I needed to work, but – if you follow me on Instagram, then you know – Squeekerz HATES being picked up. So I talked to The Hubs and asked if he’d mind if I turned our entry way aka Squeekerz’s bedroom into my office and he was game. So this is it…

I placed my desk in front of that window for a several reasons:

  • that incredible light during the day
  • it’ll make recording videos so much brighter and easier
  • it keeps my desk out of the walk way from the back door to the living room/breakfast nook combination

When we were house hunting, our realtor {Rose Steepleton – if you’re ever looking for a house in Rapides Parish, talk to her} had a monkey lamp on her desk and, of course, I had to share my monkey obsession with her. So when we closed on the house, she gifted me with a monkey lamp of my own. And, loooook, he’s standing on a stack of books!

There’s a story behind the “real” books that this little guy is sitting on {I think he needs a name}…

When I was a kid, my aunt used to take me to the doll museum in Washington, D.C. just about every weekend. The owner of the museum wrote The Doll House Mystery many years ago and my aunt had her sign a copy for me. If you look at the date, you’ll see it was signed in 2004, I didn’t receive this book until nearly 12 years later. My aunt held on to it all that time — even though we’d lost contact. I’m so grateful for this sweet memento of a shared love of dolls.

I’m a big Nancy Drew nerd. I even have a Pinterest board dedicated to her clothing style because hello. I mean girl detective with a sense of style? I also have a thing for Shaun Cassidy as a result of the TV show {I even had a Shaun Cassidy doll when I was little}. whispers: Mr. Cassidy, if you stumble across this blog, call me.

And All About Monkeys was a gift from Mylynka, a fellow bibliophile/history nerd and coffee enabler {we also went to school together in Italy}.

The chairs – aren’t they the best – were purchased at Annie Laurie’s, our favorite vintage/antique store in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. It’s like these chairs were made for this space. Side note: see that weird little polka dot jar on the table? My son made that in when he was in elementary school. We have no idea what it’s supposed to be, but it’s this really squishy material – kinda like floam.

Up above the end table, we have a little rack for keys. I think we need a bigger one, we have a lot of keys.

The Hubs found the globe during our RV travels and it just had to come home with us. The clock used to be in our daughter’s room, but it now belongs to me because possession is 9/10ths of the law. Right? And because Squeekerz is spoiled,  he has a basket for when he’s feeling social and his house when he’s not.

From my desk, I have quick access to my coffee bar, which is just behind our breakfast table. I need to share pictures of that space. It used to be my favorite spot in the house, but I think my office has taken its place.

Fun stuff. I have a thing for office supplies. The best pen ever is the Pilot Precise V5. Hands down.

Fuzzy things freak me out. But I absolutely love this pillow. And I think it adds a glam chic edge to the very masculine pattern on my chairs.

And, of course, there are plants. My bio dad had a green thumb. I did not inherit that from him. Yet, I try.

So, that’s where the photo editing and blogging magic happen. I’ve been in my new space for about 2 weeks now and I really do like it so much better than being upstairs. Now I feel like I’m still part of the action even when I’m working.
