Style Imitating Art: The Hallucinogenic Toreador by Salvadore Dali
As the blogger and photographer behind Living Outside the Stacks, I independently select and write about stuff I love and things I think you’ll enjoy too. Living Outside the Stacks has affiliate and advertising partnerships so I get revenue from sharing this content and from your purchase. Thank you for your support.
Hey, y’all, hey! It’s been a minute since I’ve participated in Style Imitating Art. I’ve definitely missed sharing my outfit pictures with you all and I hope y’all have missed seeing them. I won’t offer any excuses because, well, they don’t really matter. The thing is, I’m back and this week’s inspiration piece is all things color and print, so you know I’m all about it.
ABOUT STYLE IMITATING ART
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar {14 Shades of Grey}, Shelbee {Shelbee on the Edge}, and Terri {Meadow Tree Style}. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of them selects an inspiration image and they each post the image on their blogs. The following Monday, they share their art inspired outfits. Participants submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10 PM Tuesday and, that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.

MY OUTFIT
When I initially saw the inspiration piece, I knew I was going to wear something from my Kantha Bae collection. Kantha Bae makes print mixing and color play so easy because it’s already done for you. The hard part was picking a piece {don’t tell The Hubs, but I think I’m up to about 10 or 12 pieces}. After going through my closet, I settled on this crop top with an Old Navy eyelet top layered underneath. The colors of both made me think of the red in Venus’s skirt and the flowers, while different from the roses in the inspiration piece, are still flowers. My distressed jeans are an ode to the poor bull. And my brown sandals are a nice grounding color for everything I have going on.
Remember how I said the print mixing and color play is done for you? Look at the back of my top – it doesn’t match the front at all, but it goes with it because the colors are similar. That’s one of the things I love about my Kantha Bae pieces – each is unique and because of the way the company sells their pieces, you never know what color or pattern mix you’re going to get until it arrives. They show a picture of the pieces for sale, it could be the front or the back, and you select from that image, when it arrives, you see the whole thing. And the clothes are reversible. I know, right? So it’s like 4 pieces in one. If you’d like to purchase an item from Kantha Bae, feel free to use my code – DAENEL – for $5 off. Another cool thing about Kantha Bae is that each piece is made from vintage recycled saris and handmade by families in India and Bangladesh, that makes each piece unique.
These distressed jean shorts are my go to shorts every summer. I think I’ve had them for at least 5 years. They’re old and comfortable, completely broken in. When I bought them, they were just frayed at the hems, I took scissors and cut the slits into them. I want to do a bit more distressing but just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Maybe I’ll add a bit of lace or crochet underneath one of the rips?
WHERE I WORE IT
Earlier in the week, The Hubs and I had friends down from Pennsylvania, so we were both still recovering from that. We had so much fun catching up on life, but *whew* none of us are as young as we used to be and marathon visits wear us out now. So The Hubs and I had a slow weekend, we went to the grocery store and then sat in front of the TV the rest of the weekend. Kid you not. I think we were both in bed by 9 pm on Sunday night.
LAST THOUGHTS
“Life is too short for boring clothes.” People always tell me they love my style but they could never pull it off. The thing is, I’m not pulling anything off. I dress in a way that is comfortable for me and reflects who I am as a person. I’ve tried traditional suit looks and it doesn’t feel comfortable to me. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years it’s that I have to be me. You have to be you. Wear what makes you feel and look good. And bump other people’s opinions.
