Can you believe it’s already December? I haven’t really been up to much, just working and taking care of my family. I feel like I don’t have the energy or the time to do much more beyond that. That being said, I did find some time to DIY this denim jacket that I’m wearing in today’s post. I had so much fun picking out and placing my patches.

I’ve seen these patch jackets all over the socials, and I knew I wanted one, but I didn’t want one that looked like everyone else’s. I wanted something as unique as I am. And I wanted something that my kids would look at and laugh at the memories.

So here it is, my DIY Patch Denim Jacket.

WHAT I WORE

Do you see the little “ruby” ring on my first finger? It was a gift from my babies. Remember how they used to have the school stores around Christmas time and the kids could go and buy gifts for their parents or siblings? My kids chose this ring (I actually have two) and a silver initial necklace. All of which I still wear. They were in elementary school and, gosh, it was the sweetest thing. They were so proud of themselves. They think it’s funny that I still wear my jewelry.

When I decided to make this jacket, I knew I wanted to find patches that tell my story. I mean, I could’ve easily gone to the store and bought a patch jacket off the rack, but this was so much more fun… Curating my piece. Customizing it for me. Some of my patches are self explanatory, but a few need a little context:

  • The Raccoon – This patch was a gift from my boss. During my second week at the college, she adopted an abandoned baby raccoon that was found on campus. One of the first pictures I took of her, was her cradling the baby in her hands. Seven years later, and the picture is still in her office.
  • The Bobcat – This is our college mascot. I truly enjoy my job and genuinely like working with our students, staff, and faculty.
  • The Mystery Machine – One of my favorite cartoons when I was a kid was Scooby and friends. I learned so much about human nature from that cartoon.
  • The QR code – You have to scan it. I grew up in Italy in the 1980’s.
  • Made to Worship – Honors my faith in Christ.
  • The Veteran patch – Acknowledges my Army service.
  • 33 – Many years ago, The Hubs used to race cars, this was his number. I rode with him a few times and omg it was so fun!
  • Oh Snap – I’m a photographer and my favorite color is purple.
  • The Cupcake – Whenever my kids and I have a bad day or a holiday, we text each other that we need a “cupcake day” and I send money and we all get cupcakes. The rule is that we have to take a picture and send it in a group text.
  • The Butterfly – I got a butterfly tattoo after I finished my cancer treatments to celebrate my rebirth.

While I’ve styled my jacket with wide leg camo pants, I can easily see it with a pair of shorts or even a dress in warmer weather. And, yes, I have worn my jacket to work. I needed my boss to see her contribution.

WHERE I WORE IT

The Hubs and I were out running errands and decided to visit a few antique stores. We’re not looking for anything in particular, it’s just a hobby of ours. That being said, if we find something cool and it’s reasonably priced, we bring it home. That’s how we ended up with a vintage floor model radio, a few antique cameras, and some wall art.
