February 10 on the 10th: 10 Things I Hate to Love
As is my usual habit, I’m late with this month’s prompt. This time, I do have a somewhat legit excuse: work has been crazy busy. We’ve had a combination Black History Month / Heart Month celebration going on for the past week, which has resulted in toooooooons of pictures that needed to be edited and uploaded to my college’s social media and, by the time I’m finished, the last thing I wanna do is write a blog post. The events have been incredibly fun and well-attended, so that’s been great.
THE PROMPT: 10 Things I Hate to Love
- Dirt – specifically, the smell of my houseplants after I’ve watered them. I have about twenty houseplants scattered throughout my house and, when I water them, there’s this dirty mossy smell that wafts through the air for about 20 or 30 minutes and I just love it. It smells like life.
- Pink – I’m really not a girly girl, buuuuut I love pink. And there’s a part of me that would really like to lean into the pink aesthetic but I just can’t do it. Since I’m not comfortable living the pink life IRL, I have a virtual one, which you can check out here.
- “What Did I Just Watch?” Scrolling – I scroll my phone like it pays my bills. And, sometimes, I go down deep, dark holes that freak me out. Still, I can’t turn away. I’m not talking about the political stuff, I’m talking about the weird conspiracy theorist stuff that usually begins with a title like “Things no humans were meant to see….”
- Eclectic Nails – I’m obsessed with decorative nails. This is another thing I’d like to try but haven’t found the place or the confidence to give it a try, which is weird, considering I used to bedazzle my nails years ago when my kids were little. You can see my dream nails here.
- Online Drama – I hate drama, but I will use my librarian skills to figure out when a partner disappeared from the pictures or when an argument between former BFFs escalated to the point where they’re calling each other “cootie queen” and “lint licker.”
- Kitschy Home Decor in the Office – I admire people who decorate the office spaces for holidays with all the fun things. I can’t do it. Some of my co-workers go all out. Like they turn their office spaces into whole haunted houses or cupid cubicles. It’s the coolest thing and shows a lot of dedication to the cause.
- Cussing – There are some people who’ve turned cussing into an artform and I admire the creativity. Like, what made you think to string that particular combination together and why does it work?
- Nails on Boards – It both irritates and thrills me. There will be no further explanation because I don’t have one.
- Popping My Knuckles – I pop in even numbers. Like if I can only get 9 knuckles to pop, I’ll keep going around and around until I get ten. There’s something relaxing and mind clearing about the sound and the number.
- Crocs – My kids, husband, and sister swore by them and I was like “No!” They’re the ugliest shoes ever. Then I decided I wanted a garden, but I didn’t want to ruin my shoes, so I bought a pair of Crocs. This Army pair, specifically. I don’t wear them in the garden. I wear them around the house and when I’m running errands because I don’t want to ruin them. They’re so cute and comfortable.
