Shoe Style Saturday
I can’t remember when or where I bought the shoes but I can remember when I bought the bag… I had just graduated from Drexel University and, with shiny degree in hand, was preparing to get my first full~time position as a librarian at a local college. For the interview, I wanted a stylish briefcase and a cute suit. Conventional wisdom said to go with one of the safe colors like brown, black or navy leather case but, um, that’s so not me. I didn’t choose a “safe” black suit either. Anyway, I happened to be watching TV when this beautiful briefcase came on the air, it was a Dooney…

Loose Threads and Other Random Thoughts
1. Our dog, Squeekerz, has a bad attitude. I suspect it’s because the kids named him “Squeekerz” and because they keep dressing him up like he’s a toy. That’s him in the picture with Miss 15, you can’t see it but his eyes are screaming “Help me!” When he was little, they used to dress him up in doll clothes… 2. Next week begins Finals’ Week at the college. I can’t believe I’ve been working at the library for a semester already. It went by so fast. I remember when I started, I wasn’t sure if I was going to make a connection with any of the students but last…

Sometimes You Have to Take Quality Over Quantity
Last night as the last 1/2 hour of my temporary 3 to 11 shift at the library rolled around, I tweeted that I didn’t think I’d be able to survive without some caffeine and one of my favorite tweeters, @f8likemustard, asked me the following question: “Do you ever resent having to work nights @ the library? It would be hard for me; kids are so busy!” I had an immediate answer for her… Yes and no. My normal schedule is 2 to 10 PM but this week and next (Finals’ Study Week and Finals’ Week for the students) it’ll be 3 to 11 PM which means that I won’t get home…

1. That’s me with Miss 17. I’m so incredibly proud of her. I’m also slowly but surely preparing myself to let go as she prepares to go to college. I will not cry. On Friday, she and I hung out and did a bit of shopping, eating and talking. Seeing my daughter grow from a little bean to a young lady has been the most amazing trip. I’m one of those blessed moms who hasn’t had to go through all the problems that I caused my mother with her teen daughter. That’s not to say we haven’t had our issues (at 12 she started to lose her mind, at 13…

Heart of Haiti: A Woman Who Helped Me
One of my favorite pictures of the three of us with my mother, it was our first snow One of my mother’s favorite sayings is “Give me my flowers while I’m still living.” Meaning, don’t celebrate me and talk about how much you love me after I’m gone, tell me now while I can appreciate it. I used to think that was such a hard thing to say until my father passed away a few years ago and I wrote a post about how much I loved him and would miss him. Seriously, it’s so much easier to tell people you love them while they’re still with you and it’s better…

Religious Civility, Where Has It Gone?
It’s been a couple of days since Resurrection Sunday (Easter to some) and I’m finally in a place where I can write this post without getting teary~eyed… On Sunday morning, I woke up and checked up on all my people like I normally do. I sent out “Happy Resurrection Sunday” messages to a few friends and family and then went on about my day. Later that afternoon, I checked a couple of my usual online haunts (Facebook, Friendfeed and Twitter) to see what people were up to and was shocked at the level of meanness that people were showing towards those who observe Easter/Resurrection Sunday. Out of respect and love…

No Greater Love
John 3:16 “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 15:13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. As parents, we’re conditioned to say that we would sacrifice everything for our children, even our own lives. But would you sacrifice your life for a friend? For a complete stranger? Would you, knowing that your friend, was guilty of a crime, go before the judge and say “Your Honor, here I am, I’ll take my friend’s punishment”? That’s what Jesus did for…
