    Miss 17 Goes to Prom

You know how you have a teenage daughter and they sigh and huff at everything because you just don’t get it because you’re only mom and you’ve never been cool?  Yeah, last week that was me with Miss 17 as we drove around for 5 and a half hours looking for a Prom dress.  Well, it took the hubs all of 10 minutes to solve the problem. The hubs:  “Why don’t you go online and buy a dress from the same place you bought last year’s dress?” Miss 17:  “OK.” Me:  “Grrrrr….” Seriously, she almost made me give up shopping for good.  That would have meant no food or clothing…

Imagine a World With None of That

Have you ever been inside so long that you’ve almost forgotten what it feels like to feel the warmth of the sun on your skin?  To hear the sound of birds singing?  To smell the dirty comforting scent of grass?  Well, that’s how I was last week during my switch from evening shift to day shift. While sitting at the picnic table and drinking my coffee, I heard a plane fly over head and I instinctively looked up.  I watched as the plane flew out of sight and as it disappeared, I noticed that I had been just a wee bit tense.  I also noticed that a group of students…

I’m Guest Posting at the mahogany way birth cafe

Almost 16 years ago, I traded in my sporty little white Ford Escort GT for a mini van.  Not a “swagga wagon” but a big teal green got a pack of screaming kids in the back and gooey stuff between the seats mini van.  I was twenty~two years old and in no way prepared for three car seats (!), but nine days before I was due to give birth, the doctor announced that I was having twins… A few weeks ago, Darcel from  The Mahogany Way tweeted about a desire to collect birth stories from women of color for her blog, the mahogany way birth cafe, a birth talk blog…

Dude, That Major? Guaranteed to Keep You Unemployed

The other night as I was driving home, alternating between singing my heart out and listening to talk radio, something made my ears perk up…  A conversation between George Noory and some guy named “Uncle Ted”.  Can I just pause right here to say that late night radio is waaaay different than daytime radio?  Ok, well, I guess I did just sorta say it, huh? Well, it is.  Nighttime radio is full of aliens, ufology (the study of UFOs ~ I learned something) and Big Foot sightings…  Anyway, George and Uncle Ted were talking about the American education system and how it’s failing our young people.  And being part of…

Blogging Through The Gospels: Mark 3:35

SCRIPTURE Mark 3:35 Anyone who does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother. OBSERVATION Jesus is stating that through our faith in Him, everyone who follows Him and does as the Word of God instructs is His family and also ours by virtue of us being children of God. APPLICATION Sometimes when I’m having a little pity party, I complain to the hubs that I’m lonely because I don’t any friends or family around.  And he points out all the connections I’ve made through my blog, Facebook and Twitter and how supportive many of my online friends and family have been when I’ve needed them.  This verse is…

    Happy Mother’s Day

This morning my kids did something they’ve never done before ~ they made me breakfast.  In bed. I got up because I heard Squeekerz scratching at my door, not because he really wanted to be in my room but because he wanted to be away from the kids.  Have I mentioned that our dog hates everyone in the family unless they have bread or Girl Scouts cookies ~ preferably the shortbreads but he’s been known to pilfer a Tagalong or two?  Anyway, I got up to open the door and the dog came charging into the room at full speed as only a half Chihuahua half Jack Russell Terrier (Jackihuahua?…

    Shoe Style Saturday

I can’t remember when or where I bought the shoes but I can remember when I bought the bag… I had just graduated from Drexel University and, with shiny degree in hand, was preparing to get my first full~time position as a librarian at a local college.  For the interview, I wanted a stylish briefcase and a cute suit.  Conventional wisdom said to go with one of the safe colors like brown, black or navy leather case but, um, that’s so not me.  I didn’t choose a “safe” black suit either.  Anyway, I happened to be watching TV when this beautiful briefcase came on the air, it was a Dooney…

Loose Threads and Other Random Thoughts

    1.  Our dog, Squeekerz, has a bad attitude.  I suspect it’s because the kids named him “Squeekerz” and because they keep dressing him up like he’s a toy.  That’s him in the picture with Miss 15, you can’t see it but his eyes are screaming “Help me!”  When he was little, they used to dress him up in doll clothes… 2.  Next week begins Finals’ Week at the college.  I can’t believe I’ve been working at the library for a semester already.  It went by so fast.  I remember when I started, I wasn’t sure if I was going to make a connection with any of the students but last…

Sometimes You Have to Take Quality Over Quantity

Last night as the last 1/2 hour of my temporary 3 to 11 shift at the library rolled around, I tweeted that I didn’t think I’d be able to survive without some caffeine and one of my favorite tweeters, @f8likemustard, asked me the following question:  “Do you ever resent having to work nights @ the library? It would be hard for me; kids are so busy!”  I had an immediate answer for her… Yes and no.  My normal schedule is 2 to 10 PM but this week and next (Finals’ Study Week and Finals’ Week for the students) it’ll be 3 to 11 PM which means that I won’t get home…
