Racism, Black Women and Psychology Today

Have you ever read something that was so completely ridiculous that you weren’t sure whether to be angry or stunned by its stupidity?  Yes?  Good, because that’s how I felt when I read evolutionary psychologist, Satoshi Kanazawa’s blog post, “Why Are Black Women Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women?” in Psychology Today.  They’ve since removed the article, but there are cached versions out there.  I won’t link to them because I don’t want Psychology Today getting any traffic from my blog. The post basically states that black women are less physically attractive than other women because they have more testosterone in their systems than women of other races.  *blank stare*…

Dude, That Major? Guaranteed to Keep You Unemployed

The other night as I was driving home, alternating between singing my heart out and listening to talk radio, something made my ears perk up…  A conversation between George Noory and some guy named “Uncle Ted”.  Can I just pause right here to say that late night radio is waaaay different than daytime radio?  Ok, well, I guess I did just sorta say it, huh? Well, it is.  Nighttime radio is full of aliens, ufology (the study of UFOs ~ I learned something) and Big Foot sightings…  Anyway, George and Uncle Ted were talking about the American education system and how it’s failing our young people.  And being part of…

Heart of Haiti: A Woman Who Helped Me

One of my favorite pictures of the three of us with my mother, it was our first snow One of my mother’s favorite sayings is “Give me my flowers while I’m still living.” Meaning, don’t celebrate me and talk about how much you love me after I’m gone, tell me now while I can appreciate it.  I used to think that was such a hard thing to say until my father passed away a few years ago and I wrote a post about how much I loved him and would miss him.  Seriously, it’s so much easier to tell people you love them while they’re still with you and it’s better…

What Do You Think of the New Facebook Fan Page Profile?

Remember a few weeks ago when Facebook rolled out the new profile pages for its users and everyone was upset about some of the features, namely the row of pictures plastered across the top of the page?  Well, guess what?  Now Facebook has rolled out pretty much the same new profile page for fan pages as well. Here are some of the changes I noticed to the new profile: 1.  The most recent photos posted to the wall or that have been tagged by the page owner form a “banner” across the top of the page.  Photos posted by fans don’t appear in the stream.  A nice way to highlight…

Library Day in the Life Round 6 Reflection

First of all, I’d like to thank Bobbi at Librarian by Day for putting the Library Day in the Life Project together.  The first time I participated in this meme was back in 2008 when I was blogging at Curious Child’s Library Wanderings.  I remember I was able to keep track of everyone’s posts and comment here and there, this year whew it has been crazy!  Now I know why, according to Bobbi’s reflection post there were just under 250 people signed up on the wiki and about 800 participants on Twitter.  That is wild!  Congratulations, Bobbi, you should be proud of what you’ve done. I learned so much from reading…

Library Day in the Life Round 6

I’m the Evening Technical and Public Services Librarian at the Miller Library at Keystone College, a private, co~educational college in La Plume, Pennsylvania.  Founded in 1868, Keystone College was the first institution of higher learning in Northeast Pennsylvania. I’ve worked here for about 4 months now and I really do enjoy it.  The staff is small, only 6 people, so there are a lot of opportunities to spread our wings and be creative with providing services for our students.  Right now my major projects involve getting our students connected with us through Facebook and Twitter. I think the biggest stumbling block may be advertising.  Even though we have a board with…

Library Day in the Life Project Round 6

The 6th round of the Library Day in the Life Project is hosted by Bobbi at Librarian by Day and will begin on Monday, 24 January.  I look forward to sharing my experiences with you all and reading about the lives of my fellow librarians.  My hope is that by participating in this project that you all will see how vital library services are to your communities and that you will step forward and allow your voices to be heard when government officials consider slashing services. Day 30: My Hopes, Dreams and Plans for the Next 365 Days

This is the time of year when people start writing resolutions and planning to make big changes for the new year and, I can’t lie, I tend to do the same thing.  So writing this post should come easy but it doesn’t.  Every year I make grand plans and, for the most part, I do a good job of following through.  Until March.  I don’t know why, but March is my “quitting month.” So this year, rather than writing out a list of resolutions, I will share my hopes, dreams and plans for the next 365 days (with the knowledge that, ultimately, everything is in His hands and it is…

    Day 19: My Talent

Is the ability to slay confusion with the appropriate resource one reference question at a time… I can also balance a stack of books, a cup of coffee and a cell phone while fixing a paper jam without breaking a sweat. What’s your talent?  Do you use your powers for good or evil?

    How I Became a Librarian

The other day I read a post on Bobbi’s blog, Librarian By Day, about a potential MLIS student who was looking for advice on whether or not she should go to library school and it got me to thinking about why I became a librarian and whether or not I’d recommend this as a career choice for, say, one of my kids. I didn’t grow up wanting to be a librarian but I knew whatever I did, it would have something to do with helping people.  (I actually wanted to be a journalist.  Or a spy.  Either way, I thought I’d be covering coups in third world countries or something.…
