Week in Review: Week 15
Just about every morning I post a picture of myself with a cup of coffee. I do this as a way of connecting with my friends and just starting my day off right. As much as I’d love to sit with each of you, share a cup of coffee, and enjoy a laugh, I know that’s not possible… So this is my way of making it happen. If you’re on Instagram or Facebook, please feel free to share a picture of yourself with your favorite beverage. Last Spring, these little guys were all over the library as part of a game being played by students. I thought it was creative…

Google Reader is Disappearing {In the Cafe}
Ya know, it seems like every time I start using a product or get hooked on a TV show, Jericho, anyone? it gets discontinued and I’m left scrambling to find a replacement… And so it is with my favorite feed reader, Google Reader. Last week’s 365 Project: 2013 Edition theme was “Double Exposure”; this was my submission. If you’d like to see my daily pictures, click here. It was announced on 13 March that Google Reader will retire on 1 July 2013. What? Who made that decision? And how come they didn’t talk to me first? That gives us three months to find a new reader. If you’d like to…

Coffee Talk {In the Cafe}
So often when focusing on the news, we highlight the bad and ignore the good, well, this week, I want it all good… 1. A United Airlines crew held up a flight so that a man could make his connecting flight in order to be with his mom as she lay dying. Seriously, this made my eyes well up at my desk… A man who was flying from California to Texas to be by his mom’s side missed his connecting flight and became distraught. Once the flight crew found out what happened, they offered the man some tissues and their apologies. In the meantime, the pilot called the connecting pilot…

Coffee Talk {In the Cafe}
1. As many of you know, I have a twin sister and I also have a set of twins, so I read the story about the Belgian twins who chose to end their lives with the assistance of a doctor with a mix of sadness and whoa that’s intense. Usually, when people choose euthanasia it’s because they’re terminally ill and can no longer bear the pain. This was not the case with these twin brothers. Both were deaf and had learned that they were going blind; faced with the knowledge that they would no longer be able to hear or see each other, they chose to end their lives. I…

Coffee Talk {In the Cafe}
1. Did you hear about the Houston waiter who refused to serve a family because they asked to be moved away from a family who had a child with Down syndrome? The father reportedly said “Special needs children need to be special somewhere else.” It takes a special kind of idiot to be that insensitive towards a child, any child. The waiter overheard the comment and told the customer that he would be unable to serve them. Fist bump for the waiter because he lost a tip on that one (I’m guessing the family weren’t big tippers though just from the butt headedness displayed, so he may not have lost…

Let’s Stay Together, Even After Google Friend Connect is Gone
I love that song by Al Green, whenever I hear it on the radio, I just start singing and swaying… But, lately, I’ve been thinking about it in relationship to you, my readers. You see, I’ve heard that Google Friend Connect will be going by way of the cassette tape real soon. A moment of silence for all the songs that were recorded from the radio with a big ol’ pause while you tried to skip the DJ’s voice overs. According to my stats, there’s about 236 of y’all who follow this blog via GFC and I don’t wanna lose nary one of y’all. According to TechCrunch, GFC is being…

Who Has Two Thumbs, Is Pretty Cool and Has the New Facebook Timeline?
This girl. Yep, I took the plunge and decided to give the new Facebook Timeline a whirl. As much as I complain about the changes to Facebook and as much as I hate waking up to find that ol’ Zuckerberg has tweaked the settings, I admit to being perversely curious about the new Timeline format. To get the new Facebook, I followed the directions provided here by TechCrunch. I have to say, just from my initial look~see, I like it. A lot. I like being able to look over my history and see where I was, who I was with and what I was doing at any given time. I…

Safe Browsing on Facebook
Hey, friends, it’s time to change those security settings on Facebook again! I know, inward groan. Why oh why hasn’t Facebook decided to make security something that we have to opt out of rather than opt in to? SWITCH TO SECURE BROWSING On the right hand side, go to “Account” and select “Account Settings” On the left hand side, go to “Security” and select “Secure Browsing” Check the box that says “Browse Facebook on a secure connection (https) when possible Save your changes Your URL should now begin with “https” Although there aren’t any guarantees in cyberspace, it’s better to be safe than sorry. And, really, do you wanna be…

Happy Mother’s Day
This morning my kids did something they’ve never done before ~ they made me breakfast. In bed. I got up because I heard Squeekerz scratching at my door, not because he really wanted to be in my room but because he wanted to be away from the kids. Have I mentioned that our dog hates everyone in the family unless they have bread or Girl Scouts cookies ~ preferably the shortbreads but he’s been known to pilfer a Tagalong or two? Anyway, I got up to open the door and the dog came charging into the room at full speed as only a half Chihuahua half Jack Russell Terrier (Jackihuahua?…
