Hi, and welcome to this month’s edition of Where Bloggers Live. This month, we’re sharing our home offices and giving a few tips on how we’re managing life under quarantine.
The college that I work for is comprised of 8 campuses that are spread fairly far apart, so most of our resources are available electronically. Most of my day is comprised of ensuring that those resources are available and assisting our faculty and IT Department with whatever they may need. I also assist with the college’s social media, so I make sure that accurate information is shared in a timely manner {really, just a creative extension of my library work}.
When we first bought this house, my office was upstairs in one of the unused bedrooms, but Squeekerz was having a difficult time managing the stairs, so I relocated my office downstairs. This area is actually the back entry or mudroom to our house, but it works perfectly as an office. We weren’t really using this space as a mudroom, but more of a bedroom for Squeek first and then Bleu.
I like this space because of the big windows. You can’t tell from the pictures, but depending upon the time of year, this room is incredibly bright. And, because of the windows, I have a nice view of the backyard and all of the weird little animals that hang out back there.
We haven’t really done much decorating in here. We go back and forth over whether or not we should paint. I like the dark pecan color, but part of me wants to lighten things up a bit. I just can’t decide on a color. Because once we change the color in here, we’ll have to change the colors in other parts of the house just to maintain some sort of consistency. So, for now, everything remains the same.
The plants are rescues from the college library. I don’t have a green thumb but I didn’t want to leave those guys at the school with no one to care for them.
I don’t know what Bleu is gonna do when I have to go back to work. She has been my constant companion since we came under the Shelter at Home Order.
I really haven’t had to do much tech wise to my home office in order to work from home. The only thing that I’ve had to do is buy a headphone set with a mic. And I didn’t really need that, so much as I wanted it, so that I can eliminate background noises when I’m recording videos.
MY WORK FROM HOME TIPS
- Keep your routine – I still wake up at 5:45 every morning during the week day. Now instead of spending that time getting ready for work, I work out, drink my coffee, feed Bleu, and watch TV until it’s time for me to sign on.
- Get dressed – Showering, doing my hair and makeup, and getting dressed makes me feel very normal. As much as I like saying I don’t like schedules and lists, there is a part of me that likes routine.
- Plan out your day – At work, I have online calendar that I keep on my desktop and it sends me reminders for things that need to be done. I use this calendar at home too.
- Ignore all the tips and do you. Honestly, there isn’t a guidebook for how to react in the time of a pandemic. Things that work for me, may not work for you. And all of these quotes about Shakespeare and tips suggesting that you use this time to learn a new language or something is hogwash.
- Take this time to take care of you and yours the best way that you know how.
I’m documenting my life in quarantine here and here, please feel free to join me.
