Saturday Wanderings {About Me}
For the past few weeks I’ve been nearly vibrating with excitement; the hubs and I were supposed to go to Tennessee to visit my sister. But as with all of the best laid plans, this one fell through and the hubs and I were left wondering what we should do… We ended up running a few errands and then heading down to one of our favorite haunts: the Mississippi River Walk. We enjoy sitting on the banks of the river with coffees and people watching. For whatever reason, we didn’t stop for coffee before heading downtown. Not cool. Did you notice that she has coffee? This is also a little…

Annie Laurie’s Antiques {Getting to Know Missouri}
Recently, I attended a presentation called “The Psychology of Now… In Retail and Fashion” by Lynn R. Moore. During the presentation, Lynn talked about current trends in retail and how people have shifted their thought from “I must have new” to “How can I reuse and/or recycle?” She talked about how people are thrifting more, shopping in vintage/second hand shops, garage sales, etc and upcycling their finds. She ended her talk with a discussion about the importance of buying local. One of the stores she mentioned was Annie Laurie’s Antiques. Now I’d been hearing about this shop pretty much since I moved to Missouri but I never quite found the…

Random Stuff {This or That Thursday}
The other day I was cleaning up my desktop and found about a million folders marked “New Folder” {Why do I name them that? Can’t I be just a little bit more original? Descriptive even?} and inside of them were a couple hundred unedited photographs. These are just a few of them… These buildings overlook the Mississippi River in downtown Cape Girardeau, Missouri and are being converted into lofts. I would really like to get a chance to take a look inside but my dream would be to live in one… I just think they’re absolutely beautiful. The Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge spanning the mighty Mississippi River, the hubs and…

Goldy Bronzey Gladiator Sandals {Shoe Style Saturday}
Those are my goldy bronzey gladiatoresque shoes. I absolutely adore them. I’ve never owned metallic shoes before, I was never quite sure how to get those silvers and golds to fit into my wardrobe. Of course now I understand that you have to treat metallics like a neutral and let them be your statement piece all at the same time. Such a delicate balance we wanna be Shoe~a~nistas walk! Do you like that word? I made it up. This week was spent trying to find our summer groove. My kids are older so I don’t really have to entertain them much but I don’t want them just sitting around the house…

Peacocks. In a Cemetery. Really? {This or That Thursday}
When Miss 15 told me that she’d gone with some friends to visit the peacocks at the Cape County Memorial Park, I was tad skeeved, slightly intrigued and a little bewildered. Peacocks. In a cemetery. Really? Yes, really. Also, I hope y’all are impressed with me right now considering my intense fear of birds. I don’t care how pretty they are, birds are scary, scary critters. And, as Miss 15 stated, “Those things sound like little old ladies crying out for help.” Side note, the historian in me had to find out why there are peacocks in the cemetery: A little over 30 years ago, when Ted and Mildred Strom…

My Last Day of Freedom {Family}
Today was the kids’ last day of school. Insert tears here. Today was also my last day of freedom. Insert wailing and moaning here. The kids will be with me every. Single. Day. For the next 3 months… Knowing I was dreading my impending loss of freedom, the hubs took today off and declared it “Day of Daenel”. We started the day with breakfast at our favorite diner, Hickory House Restaurant. That was our only plan, we decided to play the rest of our day by ear. So we hopped in the car and drove down to the Mississippi River. If you’re a regular reader, you know how much I…

Hanging with Miss 18 {This or That Thursday}
Earlier this week, Miss 18 and I decided to go on a photography walk in the historic section of Cape Girardeau. You can see my pictures by clicking on the bold words. We love it down there because of the old buildings, the views of the Mississippi River and the fabulous antique shops that line the streets… Right now, though, my favorite place is the Cup N’ Cork, a hip coffee house that also serves wine. I’d visited the Cup N’ Cork earlier with a friend of mine and enjoyed the ambiance, I thought Miss 18 would enjoy it too. I also thought it’d be a nice “thank you” for…

The River Walk {This or That Thursday}
Yesterday I went for a quick photo walk along the Mississippi River… Without fail, I always take a picture of the Port Cape Girardeau… It’s just a beautiful old building and that Coca~Cola {thanks, Ellie, now you know my soda preference} sign on the side is priceless… But I think my new favorite building may be the B’Nai Israel Synagogue that I discovered on my way home. Built in 1937, it reminds me of the Middle Eastern architecture that I love so much… What did you photograph this week? I’m linking up with Deb of deb duty photography for This or That Thursday.

Sikeston Drag Strip {Getting to Know Missouri}
This weekend the hubs and I went to the Sikeston Drag Strip so that he could take his car for a spin. When we lived in Pennsylvania, he used to race every weekend {sometimes he’d take me on a ride along and OMG was it a blast}. I didn’t ride along with him this weekend, but I did have fun snapping some pictures… The hubs lining up to go down the strip. You can’t see it, but there’s a big ol’ cheese eating grin on his face. His car isn’t pimped for racing, he just wanted to see how fast it can go. He said for me to say “1/8…
